green wishes

As Christmas is just around the corner, we asked some of our contributors how they are making their Christmas green this year.

“Choosing organic produce for our Christmas dinner; taking my reusable canvas shopping bag wherever i go when shopping for gifts to avoid taking all that packaging home; wrapping my gifts in canvas shopping bags instead of wrapping paper.” Sam Sample

“My family is keeping the silly season green this year by limiting travel and coordinating the reuse of wrapping from previous seasons.” Joe Purcell

“I plan to eat mostly raw whole foods which saves on electricity and gas, and reducing the air conditioning bill by heading down to the ocean to cool off, which is also a fantastic way to receive the benefits of sunlight and salt water.” Nicci Gafen

“By not traveling by air and enjoying the season at home, using the newly installed ground solar cooling system instead of air con., fitting out solar christmas lights.” Eamon Corless

“I intend to enjoy the community spirit and I'm excited about doing the City Christmas Walk 09. I also LOVE the City of Sydney's Tips for a Sustainable Christmas which I will be living by this Christmas.” Lisa Tarry

“Trying to get the family to meet us – at the Beach with Cold Stuff Rather than the usual Big drawn out – Sticky overeating feasts at home – and all falling asleep under Aircon.” Sean Cochrane

“Greening Christmas like everything we do now starts with the right mind frame – being EmissionsAware.  Being aware of the carbon emissions that are caused by our activities helps in many ways. If we can do all the things we want with fewer demands on energy then everyone wins. Simple ways like being EmissionsAware of lighting, heating and cooling and hot water can make a big difference. Knowing and doing these things is a start but we also need to spread to word.” Michael Salvatico

How will you make your Christmas green this year?

To green our Christmas this year we are having a secret santa/kris kringle to reduce the amount of physical gifts that will be purchased. We have printed our Christmas cards on 100% recycled paper stock and will carbon offset the emissions produced by sending them via Australia Post. We are wrapping our gifts creatively using recycled wrap, fabrics and twine. I'm very much looking forward to this Christmas!
