How much does it really take to make one hell of a change? Big things come from small things. No doubt you have heard of ‘the butterfly effect’, the amazing effect the flapping of butterfly wings can have on the environment at the other side of the world. It’s even been said that the flapping of a butterfly’s wings in Australia could cause (or stop) a tornado in America.
“Sometimes when I consider what tremendous consequences come from little things… I am tempted to think, there are no little things.” Bruce Barton.
Consider the following: If one little butterfly can have such a tremendous effect on the earth, nature and the environment, then just how big an effect can one person have? You can have an effect not only by choosing the right actions, but also by using your voice in the right way!
The movie ‘Pay It Forward’ is a great example of the enormous shift that can occur in people’s paradigms when they believe in the significance of something that might start out small. The movie tells the story of a little boy who comes up with the idea of doing something selfless for 3 other people and in return they all must do something selfless for 3 other people themselves. Paying it forward aims to make the world a better place little by little.
Now what if we did this with the environment? We’re starting to become more and more aware of our carbon footprint and how we can minimize that footprint, but what if we also started to try to contribute to making the world a better place by not just acting but also raising our voices?
Imagine if everyone spread the word about turning off the lights when you’re not in a room, not taking longer showers than necessary, not driving everywhere etc. What if we could all be a butterfly, setting a paradigm shift in motion? What if we all could pay it forward? Surely this will have a bigger effect than if we just recycle our garbage?
Make it an exercise at your child’s school, make it a game at a child’s birthday party or make it a project at your company and so on. After all, didn’t a big oak come from a tiny seed? And didn’t a forest come from many of those trees?
Too many times we give up before we begin out of lack of belief and faith. But what if we would just have a little trust? What if we all start considering ourselves to be just as powerful as that little butterfly?
