Carbon sequestration Print E-mail

1. DEFINITION: Carbon sequestration

Carbon_SequestrationCarbon sequestration refers to the capture and storage of industrially-produced carbon - mainly carbon-rich petroleum fuels - from the atmosphere in carbon sinks (ocean waters, forests, soils, subsurface saline aquifers, reservoirs…) through biological, chemical or physical processes.

There are many geo-engineering techniques for mitigating the contribution of CO2 emissions to global warming. Here are three of the main methods of carbon sequestration:

- Short-term storage in terrestrial ecosystem via photosynthesis, a biochemical process by which vegetation and soils (plants, trees, micro-organisms, crops) absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Reforestation is a way to increase carbon sequestration.

- Long-term storage in oceans through fertilization of plankton and injecting carbon dioxide thousands of feet deep to be trapped by the water.

- Long-term storage in soils by pumping carbon dioxide in underground reservoirs.
