The ecological footprint is a measure of people’s impact on the Earth’s ecosystem. It represents the amount of Earth (biologically productive land and water area) that is required to regenerate the natural resources humans consume and to absorb the corresponding waste. That means the more we consume, the larger humanity’s ecological footprint is.
The Ecological Footprint is usually measured in global hectares (gha). According to The Global Footprint Network, today humanity’s ecological footprint is estimated at 17.5 billion gha. Knowing that world population is 6.5 billion people, it means that a person’s ecological footprint is approximately 2.7 gha. However, it is estimated that there is only 13.6 billion gha of biocapacity available or 2.1 gha per person. This surplus of almost 30% means that we use the equivalent of 1.3 Earths to support our consumption, so it now takes the Earth about a year and four months to regenerate the resources we used in a year.
