Water recycling is a process that consists in removing undesirable chemicals, materials, and biological contaminants from greywater – water previously used in bathrooms, laundries, kitchens and businesses - to be reused in a variety of purposes.
Water recycling main benefit is to preserve water supplies. In most cases, recycled water comes from the excess of treatment plants that produce high quality treated wastewater. There are often additional recycling facilities inside plants. Recycled water is supplied to customers through pipes that are separated from the drinking water supply.
According to Sydney Water, Sydney recycles about 25 billion liters of wastewater a year. By 2015, we will be recycling 70 billion liters of wastewater a year - that's up to 12% of Sydney's water needs. In 2009-2010, Sydney Water is investing $1.2 billion on major projects to provide essential and sustainable water services for the community.
