1. DEFINITION: Food chain

Food ChainFood chains (or food webs) are representations of a series of organisms that depend on each other for food. Each link in the chain becomes food for the next one.

At the base of a food chain, we can always find an autotrophic organism as a primary food source. These organisms are able to feed themselves from carbon dioxide and water (eg. plants). Since animals cannot make their own food, they ought to consume plants or even other animals to gain energy, becoming another matter from a food chain. Parasites also have their own food chain that is represented by a smaller organism being consumed by a larger host. And then, there are the bacteria and fungi which feed themselves of rotting material.
