Of all celebrations, Christmas is probably the least eco-friendly of all, as it is all based on consumerism. Businesses are getting their huge marketing campaigns out to motivate you to buy buy buy! And buy more. And for most, Christmas is like a race to buy as much as possible, and eat and drink as much as you can.
Of all our Christmas choices, gift giving has the potential to be the least eco-friendly. Last year Australians spent $1 billion on unwanted Christmas gifts, and over 50% of people receive Christmas presents they didn’t use. We completely waste about 4,000 tonnes of wrapping paper each year – the equivalent of 25,000 trees.
What if you gave gifts with a personal touch this year? What if you chose to think creatively as to what you can contribute to the environment as well? It seems a little silly to just buy something with no thought put into it whatsoever. Chances are those “thoughtless” gifts will end up in the trash. Not very environmentally conscious!
Isabel Lucas first came to our attention on the small screen as Tasha on the Aussie soap classic Home and Away. In 2004 she won the Logie Award for Best New Talent. From Summer Bay she then moved on to the big screen to star in the 2008 box office hit Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
With all this talk about reducing CO2, Peak Oil, energy consumption...and the list of things we should feel guilty about continues to grow. I find that there is still too much emphasis on the collective "we".
