green christmas treeOf all celebrations, Christmas is probably the least eco-friendly of all, as it is all based on consumerism. Businesses are getting their huge marketing campaigns out to motivate you to buy buy buy! And buy more. And for most, Christmas is like a race to buy as much as possible, and eat and drink as much as you can.

Truth be told, most of us love it! Christmas is also a great opportunity to spend time with our loved ones and spoil them. So how do we go about making Christmas a memorable celebration that will not harm the environment?

Green Christmas gifts are the answer. We have asked some of our writers and supporters to share their best green Christmas gift ideas for this year. From personal DIY gifts to charitable contributions, from gifts for him to her, from gifts to a 7 years old to gifts to a 90 years old, here are their answers.

According to you, what is the best green Christmas gift idea?

“Gifts that have a personal touch. Do you like to cook? garden? write? play music? sew? massage? Whatever it is that you love to do, think of how you can make it into a present. Make some jam; a little pot plant of fresh herbs from your garden; write a song or a poem; make a CD; sew a bag or knit a scarf; give a massage. Oh... and a good hand written card "from the heart" is always nice too.” Sam Sample

“A good Green Christmas gift idea would be a substantial donation to an environmental charity. But it only has meaning if that is something the recipient desires. It is easier and more rewarding to do this on behalf of a loved one, try it!” Joe Purcell

“A healthy organic food hamper like Miss Organic’s Christmas Feast or a one month’s produce box delivery package that provides that special someone with nutrition and delicious tasting foods at a time of the year typically known for over-indulgence and increasing waistlines!  Supporting organic farming is a big step towards taking care of our environment; especially air and water, for future generations and by giving the gift of health, you are also promoting sustainable green practices to your gift recipient and they’ll make great use of all the whole foods in their package.” Nicci Gafen

“The best green Christmas gift is a $500 investment funds from Australian Ethical Investment.” Lisa Tarry

“Carbon Credits for Christmas! It’s one thing we cannot give enough of.  We all know that to help stop damaging climate change we must make deep cuts in carbon emissions.  So give yourself and your loved ones the gift that can make a difference!”. Michael Salvatico

“Education, the simple gift of continual teaching to our children of life and the way we live together, why we exist and why the world exists.” Eamon Corless

“Solar Powered Fairy Lights – Well Solar Powered anything really” Sean Cochrane

Did you get Green presents for Christmas this year?
