Today, 1 July 2010, Green Times celebrates its One Year Anniversary!
The last year seems to have flown by so quickly – we’ve seen so many ups and downs, twists and turns: from a botched insulation program and ETS back flip to the current oil disaster, still out of control today. This just reinforces that there has never been a more necessary time for us to consider doing everything we can to start living in a more sustainable way and to empower others to also take action.
The Green Times’ call to action
Current events, and some of the environmental disasters observed in the past few years, seem way too out of control – it is no wonder there’s such an air of ambivalence when in fact we can all take action and contribute to building a more sustainable future for all. It is time we all step up and take control of our inherited gift, the planet.
We have to shift the balance, not only by being more informed of environmental issues but also by understanding the impact of our actions and identifying ways to better them to create a more sustainable future.
Shifting our global condition can only be possible if we shift our actions individually and teach people around us to do the same. The planet is reacting to our gross neglect as we suck it dry. We blame industry for its irresponsibility all the while as consumers we show no decline in our own consumption, so the cycle continues. How can we blame industry while we show no signs of slowing down our need to buy more things? Purchasing products and services from “Green Businesses” is a great way to start shifting into a more positive and fruitful future.
The fact that Green Times has grown so fast over the past 12 months shows that there is a growing interest and need to promote this shift. The Green Times directory has grown immensely in the past year reaching over 1200 qualified green businesses that are ready to supply all our needs for creating a sustainable lifestyle. By purchasing eco friendly products from green businesses we are furthering positive action towards a sustainable future. If everyone did that our ecosystems and world climate would already be in a better state of balance.
One of the best ways to can take action is to keep yourself informed so you can participate in the ways you feel most comfortable.
Here are our Top 5 suggestions:
1. Inform yourself – take courses, pay attention to eco and climate news, and try to find out more and understand.
2. Volunteer in green initiatives – participate in local community projects, support not-for-profit green organisations, celebrate environmental days and initiatives.
3. Buy organic, fair trade, and eco products from Green Businesses – support local businesses and businesses with ethical practices.
4. Make the best effort you can to reduce and reuse – start with yourself and empower others to do the same.
5. Share Green Times – with your friends, families and all around you!
All over the world, increasing awareness, multitudes of initiatives and government intervention has spawned huge growth in the environment sector over the last 5 to 10 years. Not all perfect, but at least we are moving towards a positive difference. However, in the end we must all take our own personal stand to make sure our planet can remain habitable for us and for our future generations.
As long as we care, share, and dare to be “green” we will get there, together.
