Global Wind Day was created to promote wind energy and show how it can help climate change and increase energy independence around the world.

Global Wind Day is a cooperation between the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). Alongside wind energy associations around the world, EWEA and GWEC coordinate Global Wind Day and the many events taking place.

In 2009, over 300 events and wind activities were organised in 35 different countries. These events include wind farm open days, conferences, exhibitions, workshops and information days, regattas, sporting contests and shows.

17 June 2010 – World Day to Combat Desertification, Worldwide

world-day-desertification

Desertification is a serious economic, social and environmental problem for many countries accross the world.

Since the United Nations Conference on Desertification in 1977 where a Plan of Action to Combat Desertification was adopted, a range of initiatives have been taking place around the world. However, despite all these efforts the problem of land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas still seem to be intensifying.

World Day to Combat Desertification was created to raise awareness of the impact of desertification and emphasize the need for action to promote sustainable development at a community level. In 2009, 193 countries were Parties in the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.
